The Indian government apparently plans to permit Indian Airlines to go ahead with aircraft acquisitions by lifting the ban it had imposed when the disinvestment process was ongoing.

The domestic carrier plans to introduce at least six more aircraft into its 52-aircraft fleet by 2002.

Civil Aviation Ministry sources said that the government had decided to give the expansion project the go-ahead after the two groups of potential investors - the Hinduja brothers and Videocon - were disqualified from bidding for a stake in Indian Airlines and the disinvestment process ran aground, AsiaPulse reported.
