Qualcomm, a wireless technology firm, has demonstrated a new communications system that is able to transmit real-time video and data information from aircraft during flight.
The new Globalstar Satellite Communications System uses Qualcomm's patented CDMA technology and a network of low-orbiting satellites to provide two-way communication between aircraft and ground services. The system can support potential aviation safety applications such as real-time video and audio monitoring of aircraft cabins and cockpits and a service to alert authorities of emergency situations, The Associated Press reported.
The system is currently undergoing the final stages of Federal Aviation Administration certification.
