Sydney Airport in Australia began charging airport fees and taxes separately from airfares on 10 September.
The change has been approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and includes AUD38.62 in airport charges plus AUD38 in federal government departure taxes. Qantas Airways has indicated that it will be dropping its fares to accommodate the fees, which are usually charged when purchasing a ticket.
The Australian Hotels Association, which fears that the fees could rise and hinder tourism, has asked the ACCC to monitor the airport's charges to ensure that the price of international tickets does not increase, according to AsiaPulse.
