Shortly before the two aircraft crashed into the building's twin towers, two United Airlines passenger aircraft were reported hijacked.

The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine was reported to have claimed responsibility for the attack, but this has since been denied.

An explosion has also been reported at the Pentagon and the White House has been evacuated.
