The Wamena airport in Indonesia's Papua province has reportedly resumed operations today (23 April) after the facility was forced to close on Sunday (21 April) following the crash-landing of an Estonian Airlines cargo aircraft. An investigation into the incident is currently under way.

Japan Airlines (JAL) and Japan Air System (JAS) have submitted a revised merger plan to Japanese regulatory authorities. The airlines' original plan was rejected by Japan's Fair Trade Commission due to its possible interference with fair competition regulations.

Midwest Express Airlines has reportedly amended its original plan to order 20 Boeing 717 aircraft, and has placed a firm order for 25 Boeing 717 aircraft plus options for an additional 25 aircraft. The airline will receive the first aircraft in February 2003 and the remaining aircraft will then be delivered at a rate of one per month.

Mexicana Airlines is planning to renew its fleet. The plan, approved by the airline's board, will cover the replacement of its remaining 11 Boeing 727-200 aircraft with newer and more modern Airbus A319 and Airbus A320 aircraft. The new aircraft will be customised to meet the specifications required by Mexicana to comply with its route network, the airline said.

America West Airlines has launched an Internet fare sale for selected nonstop flights to Las Vegas. The airline is offering reduced fares on its flights from Atlanta and Indianapolis - which will be operational from 1 June 2002. Customers who wish to take advantage of the special fares must purchase the round trip tickets online at http://www.americawest.com by 28 April 2002. All travel must be completed by 30 June 2002 and a seven-day advance purchase and a one-night stay is also required.
