Computer scientists from DePaul University in Chicago have created a 3-D animated interpreter that can translate spoken English into American Sign Language to help deaf passengers navigate airport security.

The team have reportedly used speech recognition and animated software to create an animated figure - named 'Paula' - who will translate simple sentences into the hand and body positions, configurations and facial expressions that make up ASL.

The system - proposed by a deaf DePaul doctoral student in 1998 - is also expected to be used in banks, hotels and shops, reported The Associated Press.
