Ecuador's Quito airport was temporarily closed on Friday (29 November) after protestors blocked a runway at the airport. Ecuadoran workers reportedly blocked the runway to demand more pay, causing flight cancellations and delays. Workers also protested at the airport in Guayaquil, forcing it to close for about two hours.

Following the terrorist attempt to down an Israeli aircraft in Kenya on 28 November, airlines are being urged to consider installing anti-missile defence systems. About six months ago, the FBI gave a warning that civilian aircraft could be targeted by al-Qaeda terrorists firing missiles from the ground. The airlines reportedly noted the warning but few took action as the anti-missile systems cost about GBP2m per aircraft.
