UK Transport Minister Lord Falconer has asked for an increase in the minimum space between rows of seats for airline economy class travellers after a recent study into harmonising European standards.

The study found that the population's height and weight is increasing and that there should be an increase in seat spacing. Currently Civil Aviation Authority regulations require that UK-registered aircraft have a minimum distance of 26 inches between the back of the support cushion of a seat and the back of the seat in front.

According to Labour peer Lord Morris, the danger of deep-vein thrombosis coupled with the fact that people are increasing in size, means there is an urgent need for the minimum distance to be increased. The Joint Aviation Authorities are currently considering the recommendations, reported The Associated Press.
