A sacred foundation stone has been laid in the main passenger terminal and concourse of a new international airport to be constructed in Bangkok, Thailand.

The new airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport, is to be built in Nong Ngu Hao in Samut Prakan Province and will replace the overcrowded Bangkok International Airport. The passenger terminal building (182,000 square metres) will comprise seven floors and a basement with separate halls for domestic and international passengers. The main structure and enclosure materials of the building, which is 111 metres wide, 444 metres long and 42.85 metres high, will be steel and glass. The concourse, which will be 40 metres wide and 3,213 metres long, comprises four floors and a basement. Its main structure will be made of steel and enclosure materials will be locally manufactured glass and Teflon-coated fabric.

The construction project, worth THB36.66bn, is currently scheduled to be completed by December 2004, reported Kyodo News.
