Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador believes the federal government should expand the capital's existing international airport rather than build a new one.

President Vicente Fox wants to build a new airport in the municipality of San Salvador Atenco outside of Mexico City. The decision has led to numerous protests from the residents of San Salvador Atenco - who own the communal lands of more than 5,000 hectares which the government plans to expropriate.

The mayor claims that with his proposal the air traffic problem would be solved and it also would not endanger the communal lands. Lopez Obrador has filed a constitutional challenge with the Supreme Court to halt construction of the airport, reported The Associated Press.
