Britain's new GBP623m air traffic control centre at Swanwick in Hampshire - which was originally due to open in 1996 - was finally launched on 27 January 2002.
Airlines and airports agreed that the centre's first operational day had passed without any significant delays. However the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has warned that passengers should expect some flight delays for a few days following the opening and the reorganisation of airspace in Europe.
A NATS spokesperson said that around 8% of flights were normally delayed, and that early indications suggested that the number had risen to some 11% on 27 January. Bad weather around the London airports had contributed to the delays, which ranged from around 10 minutes to 80 minutes in some cases, reported PA News.
