The US House of Representatives has passed legislation allowing pilots of US commercial aircraft to carry guns on a voluntary basis.

The measure - aimed at increasing airline security following the 11 September terrorist attacks - will allow all 70,000 US commercial airline pilots to bring guns into the cockpit, after undergoing government-approved training in how to use firearms.

The bill, which passed the House with a 310-113 vote, must be approved by the Senate before it can be introduced.

However, the legislation is expected to receive tough opposition in the Senate as the chairman of the Commerce Committee, South Carolina Democrat Ernest Hollings, opposes the legislation as does President George W Bush.
