A federal mediator has been called in to oversee contract negotiations between American Airlines and its pilot union.

Both sides have reportedly welcomed the National Mediation Board's appointment as negotiations have been ongoing for a year and have stalled on pay issues. Mediated negotiations are expected to include pilots at affiliated airlines such as American Eagle.

If mediation fails, the US President George W Bush may appoint an emergency board to oversee labour negotiations, or the union could hold strike action.
