The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has awarded contracts worth at least USD858m to Lockheed Martin, Boeing Co and Siemens Corp.

Under the USD350m contract awarded to Lockheed Martin, the company will be responsible for redesigning airport checkpoints and phasing in the trained federal security screeners. The contract's value could rise to USD490m if additional work is needed.

A Boeing-Siemens partnership has been awarded a USD1.37bn contract to install and maintain explosives detection systems at the 438 commercial US airports. The contract also calls for the team to train up to 30,000 airport baggage screening employees. The contract for machines that scan checked baggage for bombs guarantees USD508m for this year with the rest offered as an option, Reuters reported.

The TSA faces a deadline of 19 November for replacing private security screeners with federal employees, and a 31 December deadline for inspecting all checked baggage for explosives.
