South African Airways (SAA) has placed an order for 41 aircraft with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus SAS.

SAA, which had originally been looking to replace its 14 long-haul Boeing aircraft, is now planning to overhaul its entire fleet with 41 aircraft at a list price of USD3.5bn over 10 years. The airline will receive three A340-600 aircraft in the fourth quarter of this year and another four by the third quarter of 2003. The remaining 34 aircraft - a combination of A340-600s, A340-300s, A320-200s and A319-100s - are scheduled for delivery between 2005 and 2012.

As part of SAA's fleet renewal programme, the airline has also placed an order with Rolls-Royce for Trent 500 engines. SAA has ordered nine Airbus A340-600 engines from Rolls-Royce, worth an expected USD400m to the company. The airline will receive the engines from this year through to 2006.
