South African Airways (SAA) has reportedly placed a USD120m order with CFM International for engines to power new Airbus aircraft.

The order is for CFM56-5C4 engines to power six A340-300 aircraft that the airline intends to purchase in a bid to modernise its fleet. SAA is attempting to modernise its fleet in an effort to comply with noise regulations at overseas airports and to reduce maintenance and fuel costs.

The airline has placed an order for a total of 41 aircraft with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus SAS. The aircraft - a combination of A340-600s, A340-300s, A320-200s and A319-100s - are scheduled for delivery between 2005 and 2012.
