Airport workers in Rome, Italy are planning to hold a one-day strike today (24 May).

The strike action - called to protest the dismissal of some 400 employees by a food catering company serving Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport - is scheduled to take place at the airport from 1000 to 1800 local time.

The Italian airline Alitalia has reportedly cancelled 80 domestic and eight international flights, originally scheduled to operate today. It has been reported that flights scheduled during the peak hours of 0700-1000 and 1800-2100 would operate as planned.

In related news, all commercial aircraft travelling to/from the airport on Tuesday 28 May will be required to have air marshals present. The move is part of an effort to increase security during the one-day NATO-Russia summit.
