The Court of Appeal has halved a two-year sentence given to a teenager who made a hoax bomb threat to London's Heathrow Airport just four days after the 11 September terrorist attacks.

The teenager, who is now 19, prompted a major security alert that could have resulted in the closure of the airport, after he telephoned an exchange operator at the airport and said: "There's a bomb at Heathrow Airport. You've got exactly one hour." Security staff at the airport immediately carried out a risk assessment, but decided not to close the airport.

The 19-year-old was originally sentenced to two years' detention in a young offenders' institution by a judge at Merthyr Crown Court in November 2001. However, lawyers for the Russian-born teenager appealed the length of the sentence.

Three judges in the Court of Appeal decided to reduce the sentence, citing the boy's "extraordinary background", his remorse, good character and guilty plea, reported The Associated Press.
