Southwest Airlines to launch cross-country flights

Southwest Airlines, a US carrier, is planning to introduce its first nonstop cross-country flights, accompanied by additional short and medium length flights along the coasts and in the Midwest.

On 15 September 2002, the airline will begin its first regularly scheduled nonstop coast-to-coast service, with two daily flights between Baltimore/Washington and Los Angeles. The airline will also operate a daily nonstop service between St. Louis and Las Vegas and it will add another nonstop flight between Los Angeles and Sacramento.

On 6 October 2002, Southwest will also add new daily nonstop flights up and down the East Coast between each of the following cities: Providence and Tampa Bay; Providence and Orlando; Manchester and Tampa Bay; and Manchester and Orlando. The airline will operate these new services using four aircraft from its previously deferred deliveries from Boeing Co.
