A fire located in the cargo hold of an Air Canada aircraft during a flight in May 2002 was reportedly caused by failed heater ribbon.

The Boeing 767-300 aircraft, carrying 177 passengers and eight crew members, had a fire in its cargo hold during a flight from Vancouver to Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Crew members put out the fire by activating fire extinguishers in the hold, and the aircraft landed safely.

According to Canada's transportation safety watchdog, an Electrofilm brand heater ribbon, used to prevent the aircraft's potable water drain and supply line from freezing, "failed and exhibited signs of overheating and arcing".

The Transportation Safety Board has also recommended that the federal Transportation Department take action to eliminate the risk of similar heater ribbon insulation failures, reported Reuters.
