Philadelphia International Airport activated its new air traffic control system on Sunday (17 November).

The new USD1.3bn system - Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) - features colour monitors, allows controllers to view weather maps, and can be easily upgraded. However, the system - already installed at eight airports and expected to be installed at a further 74 - has faced criticism.

According to critics, the system does not always provide a reliable picture. During limited tests at El Paso, Texas, air traffic controllers were reportedly unable to distinguish between aircraft on a runway and vehicles on a nearby highway.
