Passengers may be permitted to use mobile phones during flights within two years, due to technology being developed by a US company.

The technology - by AirCell - is expected to enable passengers to use their mobile phones at an altitude of 37,000ft without endangering the flight. Currently aviation authorities prohibit all passengers from using mobile phones as they can disrupt the aircraft electronics and cockpit communications.

However, the new system will reduce mobile phones' power and limit the number of handsets in use at any time. The technology is expected to be available by the end of 2004, and several airlines have already expressed interest in the scheme, reported PA News.
