A French man who prompted an evacuation of Cardiff International Airport in Wales on 11 September 2002 has been ordered to pay a GBP40 fine.

The 58-year-old reportedly set off a fire alarm half an hour before a minute's silence was scheduled to take place to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Officials were forced to evacuate the airport, however the minute's silence went ahead as planned.

During a hearing at Barry Magistrates Court the man was ordered to pay compensation equivalent to GBP40 after admitting criminal damage to the fire alarm.

According to PA News, the man paid the equivalent sum of about EUR60, becoming the first person in Britain to pay a court fine in euros.
