Switzerland's national airline Swiss is to reduce its European and long-haul services because of the current reduction in passenger demand.

Passenger numbers have fallen because of the war in Iraq and the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and in response Swiss will make temporary flight reductions between 21 April and 31 May.

Services to Beijing; Hong Kong; Johannesburg, South Africa; Boston; Washington; Cairo, Egypt; Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania; and Nairobi, Kenya will be reduced.

The midday flights from Basel to Duesseldorf and Munich in Germany will be cancelled for the month of May while midday flights from Basel to Manchester and London City in England and to Barcelona, Spain, will be cut back, reported The Associated Press.

In addition capacity will be reduced on flights from Zurich to 16 European destinations and from Basel to London Heathrow by using smaller aircraft.
