Air Canada has reportedly filed for bankruptcy protection.

The airline - which will continue to operate to schedule - has filed for protection from its creditors in order to reorganise its business and negotiate concessions from unions and help from the government.

Shares in the airline sank to a 52-week low on Monday (31 March) and trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange was halted yesterday (1 April) pending the announcement, The Associated Press reported.
