Airport staff, border guards and migration officials held a special meeting this week concerning the people camping out at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia.

According to The Moscow Times, between ten and 50 people are camping out at the airport's international hall at any given time. The people - who sleep on the floor and beg for food - arrived at the airport either seeking asylum or becoming stranded when their airline ceased operations. At least ten people have been stuck in the international hall for more than three months, and one man has been living at the airport at Aeroflot's expense since 2001.

During the meeting all participants agreed that the obvious solution would be to create a centre to shelter those trapped at the airport, while a Federal Migration Service official suggested the construction of a detention centre "in a nearby forest".

Several proposals are expected to be sent to the Russian government, reported The Associated Press.
