UK advertising watchdog criticises easyJet ads after Ryanair complaint

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair recently submitted an official complaint to the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) concerning a series of advertisements from rival carrier easyJet.

Specifically, the complaint related to three regional press advertisements which stated "Lowest fares to the sun" or "Lowest fares to cool cities" followed by a list of destinations.

Ryanair claimed that the ads misleadingly implied that easyJet offered lower fares than its competitors for all of the listed destinations, and that one ad did not give the destination airport for those destinations that had more than one airport.

In its ruling, the ASA said that evidence submitted by easyJet did not prove that the carrier had offered lower fares than its competitors on all flights to the listed destinations.

Furthermore, the Authority said that ads stating a destination city that is served by more than one airport should also state the destination airport name.
