US introduces new USD2.5bn satellite navigation system

The US has reportedly begun phasing in a USD2.5bn satellite navigation system which is designed to open up thousands of existing runways to pilots.
The new Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is said to be a highly precise system which can pinpoint vertical and horizontal locations to within about 1.5 metres. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), pilots will be able to land even in very poor weather due to the more reliable satellite signals.
Approaches to more than 200 US airports were mapped for WAAS, which is expected to result in shorter routes, less fuel burned, less noise and a reduced impact on the environment.
