A number of airlines in the Star alliance are planning a joint order of small jet aircraft in an effort to lower costs.

Lufthansa, SAS, Air Canada and Austrian Airlines are expected to place an order for 100 aircraft and options for a further 100 of the regional jet aircraft. The group order will produce savings as common features like seating plans and cockpit design reduce manufacturing costs.

Other airlines in the alliance may join the order at a later date, according to Reuters.
