A charter jet company has been ordered to pay USD10.2m to families of three people killed in a 2001 aircraft crash in Aspen, Colo.

The compensation was won after several families of victims killed in the crash accused the pilots of recklessness. The claimants allege that the pilots were reckless in their approach to the airport after being warned that it was not safe to land in the dark with light snow falling. Two aircraft flying ahead of the Gulfstream III aircraft had attempted the approach but turned around due to poor visibility.

The aircraft - leased by Avjet - had been carrying 15 passengers and three crew members from Los Angeles when it crashed into a hillside. The company has also settled cases with some other claimants, reported The Associated Press.
