A judge has refused to drop charges against two former America West Airlines pilots accused of operating their aircraft while under the influence of alcohol.
The pilot and copilot - aged 45 and 42 respectively - were detained last year at Miami International Airport. The two men were scheduled to fly to Phoenix and were reportedly pulling away from the gate when they were removed from the cockpit after reports from ground crews that the pilots smelt of alcohol.
The pilots - who were subsequently dismissed - have been charged with operating an aircraft while intoxicated, drunken driving and culpable negligence, which carries a five-year prison sentence.
