Under new European Union guidelines airlines will be required to pay increased compensation to passengers bumped off flights due to deliberate overbooking.

Airlines will have to pay GBP415 to passengers refused boarding on long-haul flights, while shorter routes will carry penalties of GBP277 and GBP173. Those passengers facing significant delays will also have the legal right to meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation.

The European Parliament is set to vote on the guidelines today (3 July).
