AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2003 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The collision avoidance system of an Olympic Airways aircraft was triggered today (9 June) after two Turkish F-16 fighter jets flew too close to the aircraft.

The Boeing 717 aircraft had been carrying an undisclosed number of passengers and crew members from Athens, Greece to Istanbul when the incident occurred inside Greek airspace. The pilot increased the flight altitude by 700 metres to avoid the jets.

It is currently unclear how close the aircraft were, but it was inside a 10-mile radius, reported Reuters.
