The US government has proposed a new plan to reduce its airport screener workforce without increasing the length of queues at security checkpoints.

A preliminary plan based on the number of screening lanes at each airport raised concerns that it would lead to long passenger wait times. However, the new plan uses a more sophisticated formula which includes the number of passengers and considers each airport's layout.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced in May that it would cut 6,000 passenger and baggage screeners from its 55,600-person workforce by October. The first round of 3,000 job cuts has been completed.
