Belgium's bankrupt airline Sabena sold a painting by Rene Magritte at an auction yesterday (5 May).

The painting by the Belgian surrealist featured a bird whose body is filled with clouds. The airline had commissioned Magritte to paint "L'Oiseau de Ciel", or "Sky Bird", in 1965. The image appeared in Sabena's advertising campaigns and became the carrier's symbol.

The painting was sold to an anonymous buyer for USD3.8m, fetching almost USD1.12m more than estimated, The Associated Press reported.
