The Malaysian government has reportedly set aside about MYR10m for the installation of thermal imaging scanners at three main points of entry into the country.

According to The Associated Press, 14 scanners will be installed at the Causeway, 11 at the Second Link, and five at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), in order to screen passengers for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). People entering the country will be required to pass through the scanners, and if a high body temperature is detected the person will be immediately sent to quarantine for a thorough medical examination.

The government is expected to purchase additional scanners, costing between MYR150,000 and MYR350,000 each, for other entry points in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease, which has so far infected nearly 6,600 people and killed about 460 worldwide.
