Due to a decline in passenger figures, Cathay Pacific Airways is urging its staff members to take unpaid leave.
The Hong Kong-based carrier, whose passenger traffic has fallen by 75% due to the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), is seeking an undisclosed number of its 14,000 employees to take the voluntary leave. It is currently unclear whether Cathay Pacific will introduce layoffs if its target is not meet.
After the World Heath Organisation (WHO) advised travellers against visiting Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific was forced to ground 16 of its 79 aircraft and cut its flight schedule by almost half.
