Federal investigators have reportedly cited crew error for the 25 October 2002 crash of a Beech King Air A100 aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has said that the two-member crew of the aircraft badly mishandled the landing approach to Eveleth airport and did not follow proper procedures to correct problems before a stall caused the crash. US Sen Paul Wellstone, his wife, daughter and five others were killed.

The aircraft - operated by Aviation Charter Inc - was not equipped with cockpit data or voice recorders, however investigators believe they have pieced together an accurate account of the crash based on radar data, simulator tests, interviews and air traffic control communications.

Investigators have dismissed early speculation that icing may have caused or been a major factor in the crash and have also ruled out crew fatigue, while evidence showed no sign of mechanical problems with the aircraft, reported Reuters.
