An anonymous GOP senator has blocked a bill to ban plastic guns which terrorists could slip past airport metal detectors.
Lawmakers are seeking to reauthorise the Terrorist Firearm Detection Act of 1988, which bans the creation or possession of plastic firearms. The bill was last reauthorised in 1998 and expires in December.
Sen. Edward Kennedy has stated that the block is "unacceptable", and that "an undetectable Republican senator cannot be permitted to embarrass the entire Senate by blocking action" on the bill.
Senate rules permit any senator to stop a bill from being approved by placing a "hold" on the legislation without their name being revealed, according to The Associated Press.
