Greek civil servants held a one-day strike yesterday (19 November) to demand better pay packages from the Socialist government.

The strike action caused delays and flight cancellations at airports across Greece, with Olympic Airways cancelling 23 of its 105 domestic flights. Civil aviation workers, along with other public sector staff, are seeking pay rises, however the government claims that it is already overburdened with the cost of the 2004 Olympic Games and cannot afford pay increases.

Meanwhile, public hospital doctors launched a two-day strike yesterday leaving only emergency staff at hospitals and clinics, reported The Associated Press.
