The international airport in Beirut, Lebanon has been closed today (23 October) due to a general strike protesting against the government's economic policies.
The General Confederation of Labour and Trade Unions, which represents Lebanon's 350,000-strong labour force, reportedly called the strike action in order to demand taxation reform, higher salaries, improved social benefits and action to fight corruption and the squandering of public money.
The action has led to a six-hour closure of the city's airport, forcing flights to and from Beirut to be rescheduled, reported The Associated Press.
