An Aer Lingus aircraft was struck by lightning as it was preparing to depart from Ireland's Dublin airport on Wednesday (22 October).

The passengers on board the aircraft were evacuated and fire services were called to the scene after smoke was spotted rising from one of the aircraft's wings. The aircraft is believed to have departed for London later in the day, however airport officials suspended the refuelling of aircraft for two hours after the incident.

A number of transatlantic flights were cancelled because of the disruption, reported the Irish Examiner.
