New Zealand's aviation safety chiefs are to weigh thousands of people in order to set a new average passenger weight.

The figure is used by airlines to calculate the total weight of the people on board an aircraft. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is concerned that present weight calculations are incorrect and may result in aircraft flying overloaded.

The last survey conducted in 1999 found that the average weight of New Zealanders was 85 kilograms, however the standard used when measuring aircraft weight has remained at 77 kilograms as the aviation industry questioned the study's methods.

The CAA has stated that the average weight has risen since its last survey, and that a new survey weighing about 6,000 people will be undertaken, reported The Associated Press.
