British man pleads guilty to smuggling reptiles

A British man has pleaded guilty to smuggling more than 200 live frogs and reptiles out of Australia.

The man was arrested by customs officials at Perth International Airport on 20 October after the animals, which included skinks, frogs and geckos, were discovered in his suitcases. A number of insects were also found.

He has pleaded guilty to some 30 charges of trying to smuggle the animals. The offences each carry a maximum jail term of ten years. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December 2003, reported Reuters.
