Olympic Airways' main union is scheduled to hold 24-hour strike action today (4 September) against the company's financial rescue plans.

The 24-hour strike will coincide with a debate in parliament over proposals to create a new smaller debt-free airline from debt-ridden Olympic Airways, which will be launched before the 2004 Olympic Games. The revamped company, which will be known as Olympic Airlines, will merge the carrier's three distinct divisions - Olympic Airways, Olympic Aviation and Macedonian Airlines.

However, a number of parties are opposed to the plans, including the main union whose strike action may disrupt the carrier's domestic and international network, reported The Associated Press.
