Nine unions in Italy have announced that Alitalia workers are to stage a series of strikes in protest against planned job cuts at the airline.

The strikes were due to start at 1200 local time on Wednesday (28 April) at airports across Italy.

The Italian government is still considering a financial plan to save its national carrier, which is likely to involve considerable layoffs.

Delays and cancellations to flights in and out of Italy were expected, reported The Associated Press.
