The European Court is expected to give its opinion on whether a planned anti-terrorism accord between the European Union and the United States is in breach of EU treaty rules.

The European Parliament's Legal Affairs committee has asked for the court's opinion on the accord giving air passengers' personal details to Washington. The parliament last week condemned the controversial plan to hand over data such as credit card numbers and phone numbers, citing civil liberties concerns.

The court may take months to give an opinion on whether the accord breaches EU rules, reported Reuters.
