Italy's prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has denied reports that the government is considering splitting up national carrier Alitalia into two companies.

Two Cabinet ministers of the centre-right coalition had earlier expressed different views on a possible breakup of Alitalia, with the industry minister stating that splitting the airline was one option being examined, while the labour minister denied that the possibility was being considered, reported The Associated Press.

Alitalia's restructuring will be discussed in detail by the Cabinet next week.
