In an attempt to ease flight congestion at Chicago's O'Hare airport federal officials announced that 37 daily flights will be cut from the current schedule.

The deal, made in conjunction with airlines, came after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Secretary warned airlines that they faced an enforced government cap on flights to and from the airport unless changes were made.

The deal will come into effect from 1 November 2004 and affects United Airlines and American Airlines which between them operate 86% of the airport's traffic. The FAA said that the deal was a short term solution and that the only long term solution was to increase the airport's capacity, reports The Associated Press.
