A further 8000 British Airways workers have voted in favour of strike action over pay after a ballot by The Transport and General Workers Union.

The union said that it is prepared to hold a 24 hour strike on 27 August 2004 unless talks with the airline are resolved. The GMB union which represents 3000 British Airways staff said on 16 August 2004 that its members had voted in favour of strike action.

British Airways has made a new pay offer linked to attendance in an attempt to avoid a strike on one of the busiest weekends in the UK travel calendar but it may not be enough. Unions are demanding a 14.5% pay rise over three years while the airline is only willing to offer 8.5% and a GBP1000 attendance bonus, reports the Associated Press.
